In depth

From the study of Genesis 24:35

Range of meaning

Camel (in the Levant, the one-humped dromedary). Used for riding, carrying loads and long desert journeys; a mark of great wealth and of trade over long distances.

Against the English

No translation problem: all versions say 'camels.'

Used elsewhere in the period

Camels appear in the patriarchal stories (12:16; 24:10–64; 30:43; 31:17; 37:25) and as a mark of wealth in Job 1:3 and 42:12. Archaeology dates the widespread use of domesticated camels in the southern Levant to around the late second or early first millennium BCE (for example, camel bones at the Timna and Aravah copper mines, about 10th century BCE). How earlier references should be read is disputed (see debates).

From the study of Genesis 24:61

Range of meaning

Camel (in the ancient Near East usually the one-humped dromedary). A sign of wealth and long-distance trade.

Against the English

No difference between translations.

Used elsewhere in the period

Ten of Abraham's camels are mentioned in 24:10, and camels appear among the patriarchs' wealth (12:16; 30:43; 31:17, 34, where Rachel hides the household gods in the camel's saddle). In v. 64 Rebekah "alights from the camel" when she sees Isaac.

From the study of Genesis 24:46

Range of meaning

Camel, the dromedary. In the Bible camels are signs of wealth and long-distance travel (Gen 12:16; 24:10; 1 Kgs 10:2).

Against the English

No real difference in English. What a modern reader misses is the scale of the work involved.

Used elsewhere in the period

The servant took 'ten of his master's camels' along with goods of every kind (24:10). A thirsty camel can drink a very large amount of water at one time, many gallons, so watering ten of them meant repeated trips down to the spring with one jar (v.20: 'she ran again to the well to draw').
