In depth

From the study of Joshua 13:10

Range of meaning

A place name, usually linked to the root ḥ-sh-b ("to reckon, think, devise"). The same form appears as an ordinary noun in Ecclesiastes 7:25, 27; 9:10, meaning "reckoning" or "sum."

Against the English

Transliterated as "Heshbon" in every version, with no problem of translation.

Used elsewhere in the period

Numbers 21:25–30 includes an old taunt-song ("Come to Heshbon, let it be built") celebrating Sihon's conquest of the town from Moab. Heshbon later appears as a Reubenite and Gadite town and a Levitical city (Joshua 13:17; 21:39). The prophets name it again as Moabite (Isaiah 15:4; Jeremiah 48:2, 34, 45). It is usually identified with Tell Hesban in Jordan.

From the study of Joshua 21:39

Range of meaning

A place name on the Transjordanian plateau north-east of the Dead Sea. It is usually identified with Tell Ḥesbân in modern Jordan. The name looks related to ḥashab, 'to reckon, devise'.

Against the English

Every translation simply transliterates it. The difficulty is not the word itself but the memories attached to it.

Used elsewhere in the period

It was Sihon's royal city, and an old victory song about it survives in Numbers 21:26–30. Numbers 32:37 and Joshua 13:17 assign it to Reuben, while Joshua 13:26 uses it as a marker on Gad's boundary. Here and in 1 Chronicles 6:81 it is a Levite city drawn from Gad. Later prophets treat it as a Moabite town (Isaiah 15:4; 16:8–9; Jeremiah 48:2, 34, 45). Song of Songs 7:4 mentions its pools.

From the study of Numbers 32:3

Range of meaning

A place name from the root ḥ-š-b, 'to count, reckon, plan'. The same letters as a common noun mean 'reckoning, device' (Eccl 7:25). Heshbon was the royal city of Sihon (Num 21:26–30). Later it was given to Reuben (32:37), then to Gad and made a Levitical town (Josh 21:39), and later still it was Moabite again (Isa 15:4; Jer 48:2).

Against the English

All versions write 'Heshbon'.

Used elsewhere in the period

It is usually located at Tell Hesban. Excavations there have found little from the Late Bronze Age, which has led to debate about where the earlier city stood (see debates). Song 7:4 mentions the 'pools of Heshbon'. An old victory song about the city is quoted in Num 21:27–30.
