In depth
From the study of Proverbs 28:10
- Range of meaning
To receive or hold as a nachalah: an inherited, allotted possession, above all the family land portion handed down in Israel. In a wider sense, to come into lasting possession of something (honour, Proverbs 3:35; folly, 14:18; wind, 11:29).
- Against the English
'Inherit' (BSB, WEB, NASB, YLT) keeps the verb. KJV 'have good things in possession' keeps the sense of settled ownership. A modern reader may hear only 'receive after someone dies', or think of a reward after death.
- How it drifted
Modern 'inheritance' is mostly about wills and estates. Christian usage ('inherit eternal life', 'inherit the kingdom') leads readers to hear a reward after death.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Joshua's land allotments; Psalm 37:9, 11, 29 ('the humble will inherit the land'); Proverbs 2:21; 3:35; 8:21.
From the study of Proverbs 13:22
- Range of meaning
In the simple form, 'to receive or hold as an inheritance,' 'to take possession of a share.' In the causative form used here, 'to give as an inheritance,' 'to cause to possess.' It is closely tied to the noun naḥalah, the family's hereditary portion, above all its land.
- Against the English
English 'leaves an inheritance' brings to mind a will, a bank balance or a sum of money. The Hebrew idea centres on the household's patrimony, meaning its land and the livelihood it gave, held and handed down within the family line.
- How it drifted
In modern economies inheritance is mostly liquid assets passed on by testament. In Israel the core of a naḥalah was ancestral land, meant to stay in the clan (Num 27; 36; Lev 25). English readers bring the modern picture with them.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The same causative form is used for Moses or Joshua 'causing Israel to inherit' the land (Deut 1:38; 3:28; Josh 1:6) and for a father dividing his estate (Deut 21:16). Prov 19:14: 'house and wealth are an inheritance from fathers.' 1 Kgs 21:3: Naboth refuses to give up 'the inheritance of my fathers.' Prov 8:21 uses the causative form of Wisdom making those who love her inherit substance.
From the study of Deuteronomy 32:8
- Range of meaning
To receive or hold a naḥălâ: a family's inalienable estate, its allotted share of land handed down through the generations. In the causative form (hiphil, as here) it means to assign such a share to someone, to give them their portion. The whole idea is land allotted by a higher authority and held as patrimony.
- Against the English
English "inheritance" makes most people think of property received when a relative dies. Here no one has died. The picture is an overlord dividing territory and giving each party its estate, like Joshua dividing Canaan among the tribes by lot (Josh 13–19).
- How it drifted
In modern English "inherit" has narrowed to receiving property at death. In biblical Hebrew the core sense is holding an allotted share. Death is only one way such a share passes on.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Used constantly for tribal allotments (Num 26:52–56; Josh 14:1–2). The noun naḥălâ comes back in v. 9: "Jacob is the allotted share (ḥebel, a measuring-line) of his naḥălâ." Deut 4:19–20 states the same idea in prose: the heavenly bodies were "allotted" (ḥālaq) to the peoples, while YHWH took Israel "to be a people of his own possession (naḥălâ)".

Joshua son of Nun, who stands before you, will enter it. Encourage him, for he will enable Israel to inherit the land.
Here: "He will cause [Israel] to inherit *it*." The ending "it" is feminine, which points back to "the land" (feminine in Hebrew). The verb form means bringing others into possession: Joshua will put Israel in possession of the land and share it out as their family holdings.
-
Deuteronomy 3:28 יַנְחִ֣יל he will give as an inheritance
But commission Joshua, encourage him, and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of the people and enable them to inherit the land that you will see.”

Here: "You will make them take possession of it as their nachalah." The ending "-ah" ("it") refers to the land, which is a feminine noun in Hebrew. Joshua will hand out the land as permanent family holdings. This is the job he carries out in Joshua 13–21.
-
Deuteronomy 32:8 בְּהַנְחֵ֤ל when gave inheritances to
When the Most High gave the nations their inheritance, when He divided the sons of man, He set the boundaries of the peoples according to the number of the sons of God.
Here: "When [he] gave out allotments." The causative form means making someone the holder of a family estate. It opens a time clause that sets the scene in the distant past (v. 7, "remember the days of old").
Joshua · 9
-
Joshua 1:6 תַּנְחִיל֙ you will cause to inherit
Be strong and courageous, for you shall give these people the inheritance of the land that I swore to their fathers I would give them.

-
Joshua 13:32 נִחַ֥ל he gave as a possession

-
Joshua 16:4 וַיִּנְחֲל֥וּ and they received their inheritance
So Ephraim and Manasseh, the sons of Joseph, received their inheritance.
Here: "And they received their allotted holding." The verb is in the ordinary storytelling form ("and then they…"), and it closes the account of the shared Joseph border in verses 1–3. In its simple form it means to come into a family portion: here, land given by lot under God's direction, not wealth left by someone who died.
-
Joshua 17:6 נָחֲל֥וּ they inherited
because the daughters of Manasseh received an inheritance among his sons. And the land of Gilead belonged to the rest of the sons of Manasseh.
Here: 'They received as a family holding.' The verb is about receiving a permanent hereditary share of land, not about something passed on in a will at a death. The form describes a completed act: it happened.
-
Joshua 19:9 וַיִּנְחֲל֥וּ and they received their inheritance
The inheritance of the Simeonites was taken from the territory of Judah, because the share for Judah’s descendants was too large for them. So the Simeonites received an inheritance within Judah’s portion.
-
Joshua 19:49 לִנְחֹל־ to divide for possession
When they had finished distributing the land into its territories, the Israelites gave Joshua son of Nun an inheritance among them,

Psalms · 3
-
Psalm 69:36 יִנְחָל֑וּהָ they will inherit it
The descendants of His servants will inherit it, and those who love His name will settle in it.
Here: 'They will take it as their family holding.' The verb comes from the land-allotment world of Joshua: a family's share, granted by God, kept in the family for good. The ending '-ha' ('her/it') points back to Zion or the land of verse 35.
-
Psalm 82:8 תִ֝נְחַ֗ל you have an inheritance
Arise, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are Your inheritance.
Here: To hold something as your own lawful allotted portion, the way an Israelite family held its ancestral land. The verb form can mean 'you will inherit' or 'you do hold'. It reverses the old picture in which each nation was assigned to a different divine being and only Israel was the LORD's portion (Deut 32:8–9).
-
Psalm 119:111 נָחַ֣לְתִּי I have inherited
Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.
Here: "I have taken as my inheritance." This is the verb for receiving a family's or tribe's allotted land, the estate that belongs to you for good. Putting it first, as a completed act, says the speaker has already claimed God's testimonies as his estate and now lives on them. It also opens the line with the letter nun, as every verse in this stanza does.

He who brings trouble on his house will inherit the wind, and the fool will be servant to the wise of heart.
-
Proverbs 13:22 יַנְחִ֥יל he leaves an inheritance to
A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is passed to the righteous.

-
Proverbs 14:18 נָחֲל֣וּ they inherit
The simple inherit folly, but the prudent are crowned with knowledge.
-
Proverbs 28:10 יִנְחֲלוּ־ they will inherit

Isaiah · 3
-
Isaiah 14:2 וְהִֽתְנַחֲל֣וּם and they will receive as an inheritance them
The nations will escort Israel and bring it to its homeland. Then the house of Israel will possess the nations as menservants and maidservants in the LORD’s land. They will make captives of their captors and rule over their oppressors.
Here: 'And they will take them as their own inherited possession.' Now 'them' means the peoples. This verb is used in the law of foreign bond-servants (Lev 25:46), which lets you pass such servants on to your children. So it frames the nations as Israel's lasting household property.
-
Isaiah 49:8 לְהַנְחִ֖יל to give as inheritance
This is what the LORD says: “In the time of favor I will answer You, and in the day of salvation I will help You; I will keep You and appoint You to be a covenant for the people, to restore the land, to apportion its desolate inheritances,
Here: 'To give out as inherited property.' This is the very verb used of Joshua, who was to divide the land among the tribes (Deuteronomy 31:7; Joshua 1:6). The servant does a new Joshua's work.
-
Isaiah 57:13 יִנְחַל־ he will inherit
When you cry out, let your companies of idols deliver you! Yet the wind will carry off all of them, a breath will take them away. But he who seeks refuge in Me will inherit the land and possess My holy mountain.”
Here: 'Will receive the land as his share.' The word comes from the allotting of the land to Israel's tribes and families (nachalah). It echoes 57:6, where the idolaters' 'portion' and 'lot' were the smooth stones of the wadi (nachal).
Jeremiah · 3
-
Jeremiah 3:18 הִנְחַ֖לְתִּי I gave as an inheritance
In those days the house of Judah will walk with the house of Israel, and they will come together from the land of the north to the land that I gave to your fathers as an inheritance.

-
Jeremiah 12:14 הִנְחַ֥לְתִּי I gave as an inheritance
This is what the LORD says: “As for all My evil neighbors who attack the inheritance that I bequeathed to My people Israel, I am about to uproot them from their land, and I will uproot the house of Judah from among them.
Here: 'I made [them] inherit': the causative form makes Yahweh the one who handed over the holding. Israel's title to the land comes from him, so an attack on it is an attack on his grant.
-
Jeremiah 16:19 נָחֲל֣וּ they possessed
O LORD, my strength and my fortress, my refuge in the day of distress, the nations will come to You from the ends of the earth, and they will say, “Our fathers inherited nothing but lies, worthless idols of no benefit at all.
Here: "They inherited": received as the family estate passed down the generations. This echoes v.18, where Judah filled Yahweh's "inheritance" (naḥălātî) with idols.
Ezekiel · 3

Ezekiel 46:18 יַנְחִ֣ל he will cause to inherit
The prince must not take any of the inheritance of the people by evicting them from their property. He is to provide an inheritance for his sons from his own property, so that none of My people will be displaced from his property.’”
Here: The verb form of 'inheritance': he is to settle land on his sons as their inheritance. It picks up the noun earlier in the verse, contrasting the people's inheritance with the one he may legitimately create.
-
Ezekiel 47:13 תִּתְנַחֲל֣וּ you will give as possession

Here: "They will take them as their holding": the language of Israel's land allotment. Moab and Ammon pushed into Judah's border (v. 8), and now Judah's survivors will hold theirs.
