In depth

From the study of Psalm 119:105

Range of meaning

A lamp, usually a small open clay saucer or pinched-spout lamp that burned olive oil through a flax wick. It also served as a picture: a burning lamp in someone's tent meant life and prosperity (Job 18:6; 29:3; Prov 13:9; 20:20). A 'lamp' for David meant his dynasty continuing (1 Kgs 11:36). God himself is called the psalmist's lamp (2 Sam 22:29; Ps 18:28).

Against the English

The English 'lamp' is accurate. The difference is scale. A modern reader may picture an electric lamp lighting a whole room or a torch beam. An ancient oil lamp gave a small, flickering pool of light, enough to see the ground near you and not much more.

Used elsewhere in the period

Proverbs 6:23 is the closest parallel: 'For the commandment is a lamp (ner) and the teaching (torah) a light (or), and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life.' Job 29:3: 'when his lamp shone upon my head, and by his light I walked through darkness.' The lamp and light pair also appears in Job 18:5–6 and Jeremiah 25:10. Clay lamps are among the most common finds at Israelite sites.

From the study of Proverbs 31:18

Range of meaning

A household oil lamp. Also the temple lamps (Exod 27:20; 1 Sam 3:3). As a picture: a person's life, line of descendants or prosperity (2 Sam 21:17; 1 Kgs 11:36; Prov 13:9; 20:27).

Against the English

KJV 'candle' brings in a wax or tallow candle, which ancient Israel did not use. Modern versions rightly say 'lamp.'

How it drifted

In 1611 'candle' was the everyday English word for a household light. The KJV used it for nēr throughout.

Used elsewhere in the period

'The lamp of the wicked will be put out' (Prov 24:20; also 13:9; 20:20; Job 18:5–6; 21:17). Jeremiah 25:10 lists 'the light of the lamp' among the sounds and signs of ordinary household life that judgment will end.

From the study of Proverbs 24:20

Range of meaning

A lamp: the small, palm-sized clay oil lamp of Israelite homes, and the lampstand lamps of the sanctuary. As a picture it stands for life and vitality (Prov 20:27, "the spirit of man is the lamp of the LORD"), for prosperity and well-being (Job 29:3), and for the continuance of a household or dynasty (2 Sam 21:17; 1 Kgs 11:36; 15:4; Ps 132:17, David's "lamp").

Against the English

Modern versions say "lamp," which is accurate. KJV's "candle" brings in a wax candle, which Israel did not use. The picture is the same, but "candle" loses the household oil lamp that had to be refilled and tended.

How it drifted

In 1611 "candle" was a common English word for any small light. The KJV used it here and in similar verses (Job 18:6; 21:17; Prov 13:9; 20:20).

Used elsewhere in the period

"The lamp of the wicked goes out" was a fixed saying in Israel's wisdom tradition. Prov 13:9 has nearly the same words with the same verb. See also Prov 20:20, Job 18:5–6 and Job 21:17, where Job asks with bitter irony, "How often is the lamp of the wicked put out?" Jer 25:10 lists "the light of the lamp" among the signs of ordinary household life that will cease.

Where it appears

Exodus · 11
  1. Exodus 25:37 נֵרֹתֶ֖יהָ נֵ֣רֹתֶ֔יהָ lamps its

Make seven lamps and set them up on the lampstand so that they illuminate the area in front of it.

Here: "Her lamps." The "her" is the lampstand (menorah, a feminine noun). A ner is an oil lamp: a small open bowl with a spout for a wick. The lamps are treated as separate items made in addition to the lampstand and set on top of its branches, not as part of the hammered stand itself.

  2. Exodus 27:20 נֵ֖ר a lamp

And you are to command the Israelites to bring you pure oil of pressed olives for the light, to keep the lamps burning continually.

Here: Grammatically singular, 'a lamp.' Most likely it stands for all seven lamps of the lampstand (Exod 25:37). Jewish tradition later linked it to one particular lamp.

  3. Exodus 30:7 הַנֵּרֹ֖ת the lamps

And Aaron is to burn fragrant incense on it every morning when he tends the lamps.

Here: "The lamps": the seven oil lamps set on the golden lampstand (menorah) in the Holy Place (25:31–40), fuelled with pure pressed olive oil (27:20–21).

  2. Leviticus 24:4 הַנֵּר֑וֹת the lamps

He shall tend the lamps on the pure gold lampstand before the LORD continually.

For David it also recalls the "lamp of Israel" in 2 Samuel 21:17, the king's own life. God himself is the flame that keeps David and his line alive.

  5. 2 Chronicles 29:7 הַנֵּר֔וֹת the lamps

For You, O LORD, light my lamp; my God lights up my darkness.

Here: "My lamp" means a small clay oil lamp, the kind kept burning in a house. It stood for the life and continuance of a person or a household. In a king's mouth it also suggests the survival of his royal line (see 1 Kings 11:36; Psalm 132:17).

  2. Psalm 119:105 נֵר־ [is] a lamp

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

Here: A small clay oil lamp, the ordinary household light of ancient Israel. It comes first in the sentence and carries the stress: 'A lamp, that is what your word is.' It also opens the Nun stanza of this alphabet poem, because ner begins with the letter nun.

  3. Psalm 132:17 נֵ֝֗ר a lamp

There I will make a horn grow for David; I have prepared a lamp for My anointed one.

Here: A small clay oil lamp. A lamp kept burning in a house meant the family was alive and still living there; a lamp put out meant the family was gone. Here it is God's pledge that David's line will not die out.

Proverbs · 7
  1. Proverbs 6:23 נֵ֣ר [is] a lamp

  4. Proverbs 20:27 נֵ֣ר [the] lamp of

The spirit of a man is the lamp of the LORD, searching out his inmost being.

Here: The small clay oil lamp of an Israelite house, an open saucer of olive oil with a wick at the pinched lip. It comes first in the Hebrew for emphasis: 'a lamp of Yahweh, that is what human breath is.'

  5. Proverbs 21:4 נִ֖ר [the] lamp of

Haughty eyes and a proud heart—the guides of the wicked—are sin.

Here: As pointed and tagged here, a rarer spelling of the word for 'lamp' (ner), also found in the 'lamp' promised to David's line (1 Kgs 11:36). In Proverbs the 'lamp of the wicked' stands for their life, prosperity and continuing household (13:9; 24:20). The same consonants can also mean 'freshly broken ground', which lies behind KJV 'plowing' (see debates).

  6. Proverbs 24:20 נֵ֖ר [the] lamp of

For the evil man has no future; the lamp of the wicked will be extinguished.

Here: A small clay oil lamp, the light of a lived-in house. Here it stands for the wicked man's life, household and line continuing.

  7. Proverbs 31:18 נֵרָֽהּ׃ lamp her

She sees that her gain is good, and her lamp is not extinguished at night.

Here: 'Her lamp': a small clay saucer of olive oil with a wick. Elsewhere in Proverbs a person's lamp is a picture of their life and fortunes (13:9; 20:20; 24:20). So the phrase is about real oil and late work, and it also says her house is thriving.

Jeremiah · 1
  1. Jeremiah 25:10 נֵֽר׃ a lamp
