In depth

From the study of Song of Songs 8:6

Range of meaning

Intense, burning passion aimed at something one claims exclusively. It can be jealousy (a husband's jealousy, Num 5:14; Prov 6:34), envy or rivalry (Eccl 4:4), zeal (Phinehas, Num 25:11; 'zeal for your house', Ps 69:9), or God's own fierce devotion to his people (Isa 9:7; 'the LORD whose name is Jealous', Exod 34:14). The common thread is heat and exclusiveness.

Against the English

Modern 'jealousy' mostly means insecure suspicion or envy of what others have. The Hebrew word includes that, but here, in parallel with 'love', it is the ardent, exclusive side of love: the refusal to share the beloved. The NRSV renders it 'passion'.

How it drifted

English 'jealous' has narrowed toward a negative feeling. In the Hebrew Bible the same root also describes zeal and God's devotion, which are praised.

Used elsewhere in the period

Proverbs warns that a husband's jealousy shows no mercy (Prov 6:34) and asks 'who can stand before jealousy?' (Prov 27:4). Both show its unstoppable force, which the Song uses here as praise. God's qinʾâ 'burns like fire' (Ps 79:5; Zeph 1:18; Deut 4:24, 'a consuming fire, a jealous God'). The pairing of jealousy and fire matches this verse.

From the study of Proverbs 27:4

Range of meaning

Covers a family of intense feelings that English splits into several words: zeal (burning commitment, e.g. Phinehas's zeal for God, Num 25:11; 'zeal for your house', Ps 69:9), jealousy (a husband's suspicion or fury over his wife's faithfulness, Num 5:14, 30; Prov 6:34), envy (resentment of someone else's success, Prov 14:30; Eccl 4:4), and God's own exclusive claim on his people ('a jealous God', Exod 20:5, which uses the related adjective). What ties them together is a fierce, focused passion over a claim, a rival or a cause. Some scholars link the root to a word for 'becoming deep red', the flushed face of strong passion, but that origin is uncertain.

Against the English

BSB, WEB and most modern versions say 'jealousy'. KJV says 'envy'. Modern English uses 'envy' for wanting what someone else has, and 'jealousy' often for a petty or insecure feeling. Neither word in its everyday modern sense captures a passion strong enough to be ranked above flood-like anger.

How it drifted

English has narrowed 'jealousy' toward insecurity and 'envy' toward coveting. The Hebrew word names a force, not a mood: the same word describes God's zeal and a wronged husband's revenge.

Used elsewhere in the period

Prov 6:34–35 is the closest parallel inside Proverbs: 'For jealousy (qinʾah) is a man's rage (ḥemah); he will not spare on the day of vengeance. He will accept no ransom.' Song 8:6: 'jealousy is fierce as Sheol' (the grave). Prov 14:30: 'envy (qinʾah) is rot in the bones.' The Greek translation (LXX) renders it here with zēlos, which covers the same zeal/jealousy range.

From the study of Isaiah 59:17

Range of meaning

Intense, possessive-protective passion: zeal, ardor, jealousy (in the sense of guarding an exclusive bond), and also envy or rivalry when used of humans. For God it is his burning commitment to his covenant people and to his own name. BDB connects the root with a sense of flushing or turning red, i.e. heat, though that derivation is uncertain.

Against the English

'Zeal' to modern ears can sound like religious enthusiasm or fanaticism; 'jealousy' sounds like petty insecurity. Neither captures the heat of a protector's passion for what belongs to him.

How it drifted

English 'jealous' has narrowed toward envy and suspicion in relationships. 'Zeal' has drifted toward eagerness or over-enthusiasm.

Used elsewhere in the period

Isa 9:7 (Heb 9:6), 'the zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this'; 42:13, 'the LORD goes out like a mighty man; like a man of war he stirs up qin'ah'; 63:15, 'where is your zeal and your might?'; Num 25:11 (Phinehas). Psalm 109:29 uses the same three clothing words (put on, wrap, me'il) for enemies wrapped in shame.

  1. Numbers 5:14 קִנְאָ֛ה קִנְאָה֙ jealousy

  3. Numbers 5:18 קְנָאֹ֖ת jealousi<es>

  7. Numbers 25:11 קִנְאָתִ֖י בְּקִנְאָתִֽי׃ zeal my, in zeal my

“Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned My wrath away from the Israelites; for he was zealous for My sake among them, so that I did not consume the Israelites in My zeal.

Here: 'My zeal' or 'my jealousy', God's own fierce, exclusive claim on Israel. Phinehas's passion is described as God's passion carried out by a human being, not merely zeal on God's behalf.

Deuteronomy · 1
  1. Deuteronomy 29:20 וְקִנְאָתוֹ֙ and jealousy his

The LORD will never be willing to forgive him. Instead, His anger and jealousy will burn against that man, and every curse written in this book will fall upon him. The LORD will blot out his name from under heaven

Here: 'And his jealousy': the fierce, exclusive passion of a covenant partner whose rightful loyalty has been given to rivals. Here it answers the man's turn to other gods (v. 18).

2 Kings · 2
  1. 2 Kings 10:16 בְּקִנְאָתִ֣י on zeal my

saying, “Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD!” So he had him ride in his chariot.

Job · 1
  1. Job 5:2 קִנְאָֽה׃ jealousy

For resentment kills a fool, and envy slays the simple.

Here: Heated, consuming passion. It can be envy of others' good fortune, jealous anger, or indignation. Paired with vexation, it names the overheated feeling that wears a person down from inside. It comes last in the line, as the climax.

Psalms · 3
  1. Psalm 69:9 קִנְאַ֣ת [the] zeal of

because zeal for Your house has consumed me, and the insults of those who insult You have fallen on me.

Here: A hot, protective passion for something that belongs to you, or to someone you belong to. It is the same word used for God's own 'jealousy'. Here it is the speaker's burning devotion to God's house. The form means 'zeal of', and the sense is 'zeal for'.

  2. Psalm 79:5 קִנְאָתֶֽךָ׃ jealousy your

How long, O LORD? Will You be angry forever? Will Your jealousy burn like fire?

Here: 'Your jealousy': God's fierce, exclusive passion over the people he claims as his own. Israel's unfaithfulness has provoked it (see v. 8, 'former iniquities'). The word stands last in the verse for emphasis.

  3. Psalm 119:139 קִנְאָתִ֑י zeal my

My zeal has consumed me because my foes forget Your words.

Here: 'My zeal': the hot, protective passion of someone whose exclusive loyalty has been slighted. It is the grammatical subject (feminine, matching the feminine verb). The psalmist's own devotion is what is destroying him.

Proverbs · 3
  1. Proverbs 6:34 קִנְאָ֥ה jealousy

For jealousy enrages a husband, and he will show no mercy in the day of vengeance.

  2. Proverbs 14:30 קִנְאָֽה׃ jealousy

A tranquil heart is life to the body, but envy rots the bones.

Here: A hot, consuming passion. Here it is the destructive kind: envy, jealous rivalry, a mind inflamed against someone else. It is the last word of the verse, so the culprit is named last.

  3. Proverbs 27:4 קִנְאָֽה׃ jealousy

Wrath is cruel and anger is like a flood, but who can withstand jealousy?

Here: An intense, all-consuming passion that someone feels about what they see as rightfully theirs or about a rival. Here it means the dangerous human form, most likely the jealous fury of someone wronged (compare 6:34). The verse ranks it above rage and anger.

Ecclesiastes · 2
  1. Ecclesiastes 4:4 קִנְאַת־ [is] envy of

I saw that all labor and success spring from a man’s envy of his neighbor. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.

Here: A hot, possessive passion aimed at someone else: here the envy or competitiveness that sets one person against another.

Song of Songs · 1
  1. Song of Songs 8:6 קִנְאָ֑ה jealousy

Set me as a seal over your heart, as a seal upon your arm. For love is as strong as death, its jealousy as unrelenting as Sheol. Its sparks are fiery flames, the fiercest blaze of all.

Here: Love's fierce, exclusive passion, which will not share its beloved. It parallels 'love', so it is the same love seen from its burning, possessive side, not a separate vice.

Isaiah · 7
  1. Isaiah 9:7 קִנְאַ֛ת [the] zeal of

Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from that time and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

Here: 'The zeal of.' This is God's fierce, protective passion for what belongs to him. It is the same word used for jealousy within an exclusive bond. Here it is the energy that guarantees the promise.

  2. Isaiah 11:13 קִנְאַ֣ת [the] jealousy of

Then the jealousy of Ephraim will depart, and the adversaries of Judah will be cut off. Ephraim will no longer envy Judah, nor will Judah harass Ephraim.

Here: "The jealousy of". This is hot, competitive passion over status and rights. It is not a quiet private feeling. In Ephraim's case it had boiled over into war. Only two chapters earlier Isaiah used the same form for God's own zeal (9:7, "the zeal of the LORD of hosts").

  3. Isaiah 26:11 קִנְאַת־ [the] zeal of

O LORD, Your hand is upraised, but they do not see it. They will see Your zeal for Your people and be put to shame. The fire set for Your enemies will consume them!

Here: 'The zeal of / for.' This is God's intense, protective passion for what belongs to him, a passion that acts. It is not petty envy.

  4. Isaiah 37:32 קִנְאַ֛ת [the] zeal of

For a remnant will go forth from Jerusalem, and survivors from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.

  5. Isaiah 42:13 קִנְאָ֑ה zeal

The LORD goes forth like a mighty one; He stirs up His zeal like a warrior. He shouts; yes, He roars in triumph over His enemies:

Here: God's burning, possessive passion for what belongs to him: his people and his honour, which he 'will not give to another' (42:8). This is the energy that drives him into battle.

  6. Isaiah 59:17 קִנְאָֽה׃ zeal

He put on righteousness like a breastplate, and the helmet of salvation on His head; He put on garments of vengeance and wrapped Himself in a cloak of zeal.

Here: Burning, protective passion for what is one's own: God's fierce commitment to his people and his name. It is wrapped around everything else, so this passion is what is seen on the outside.

  7. Isaiah 63:15 קִנְאָֽתְךָ֙ [are] zeal your

Look down from heaven and see, from Your holy and glorious habitation. Where are Your zeal and might? Your yearning and compassion for me are restrained.

Here: 'Your zeal': God's fierce, protective passion for what is his. In Isaiah it is the warrior's zeal with which he defends his people and defeats their enemies (9:7; 42:13; 59:17).

Ezekiel · 10
  1. Ezekiel 5:13 בְּקִנְאָתִ֔י in jealousy my

And when My anger is spent and I have vented My wrath against them, I will be appeased. And when I have spent My wrath on them, they will know that I, the LORD, in My zeal have spoken.

Here: 'In my jealousy': the burning passion of someone whose exclusive bond has been betrayed, like a husband's. It is not petty envy.

  2. Ezekiel 8:3 הַקִּנְאָ֥ה <the> jealousy

He stretched out what looked like a hand and took me by the hair of my head. Then the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and carried me in visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the idol that provokes jealousy was seated.

Here: 'Of the jealousy.' This labels the statue by its effect: it sets off YHWH's exclusive, covenant jealousy.

  3. Ezekiel 8:5 הַקִּנְאָ֥ה <the> jealousy

“Son of man,” He said to me, “now lift up your eyes to the north.” So I lifted up my eyes to the north, and in the entrance north of the Altar Gate I saw this idol of jealousy.

  4. Ezekiel 16:38 וְקִנְאָֽה׃ and jealousy

And I will sentence you to the punishment of women who commit adultery and those who shed blood; so I will bring upon you the wrath of your bloodshed and jealousy.

Here: "And jealousy": the passionate, exclusive claim of a husband whose wife has betrayed him (compare Prov 6:34, "jealousy is a man's rage"). It is God's qin'ah, as v.42 confirms ("my jealousy will turn away from you"), and it is not petty envy.

  5. Ezekiel 16:42 קִנְאָתִ֖י jealousy my

So I will lay to rest My wrath against you, and My jealousy will turn away from you. Then I will be calm and no longer angry.

  6. Ezekiel 23:25 קִנְאָתִ֜י jealousy my

And I will set My jealous rage against you, and they will deal with you in fury. They will cut off your noses and ears, and your survivors will fall by the sword. They will seize your sons and daughters, and your remnant will be consumed by fire.

  7. Ezekiel 35:11 וּכְקִנְאָ֣תְךָ֔ and according to jealousy your

Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says: Surely in My burning zeal I have spoken against the rest of the nations, and against all Edom, who took My land as their own possession with wholehearted joy and utter contempt, so that its pastureland became plunder.

Here: 'My jealousy': a fierce, protective passion for what rightly belongs to him, here his land and people. It is not petty envy.

  9. Ezekiel 36:6 בְקִנְאָתִ֤י in jealousy my

Therefore, prophesy concerning the land of Israel and tell the mountains and hills, the ravines and valleys, that this is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I have spoken in My burning zeal because you have endured the reproach of the nations.

  10. Ezekiel 38:19 וּבְקִנְאָתִ֥י and in jealousy my

In My zeal and fiery rage I proclaim that on that day there will be a great earthquake in the land of Israel.

Zephaniah · 2
  1. Zephaniah 1:18 קִנְאָת֔וֹ jealousy his

Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the Day of the LORD’s wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of His jealousy.” For indeed, He will make a sudden end of all who dwell on the earth.

Here: "His jealousy." This is the passionate, exclusive claim of a covenant partner who has been betrayed, like a husband whose wife has taken lovers. Here it answers Judah's worship of Baal, the stars and Milcom (1:4–5).

  2. Zephaniah 3:8 קִנְאָתִ֔י jealousy my

Therefore wait for Me,” declares the LORD, “until the day I rise to testify. For My decision is to gather nations, to assemble kingdoms, to pour out upon them My indignation—all My burning anger. For all the earth will be consumed by the fire of My jealousy.

Here: 'My jealousy.' This is the fierce, exclusive commitment of the covenant God, who will not share what is his or let wrong stand. It is not petty envy.

Then the angel who was speaking with me said, “Proclaim this word: This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I am very jealous for Jerusalem and Zion,

  2. Zechariah 8:2 קִנְאָ֣ה jealousy

This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “I am jealous for Zion with great zeal; I am jealous for her with great fervor.”
