In depth
From the study of Revelation 21:8
- Range of meaning
Part, share, portion. Often it means an allotted share, as in an inheritance, a lot or someone's fate. Through the Greek Old Testament it overlaps with meris and klēros, the "portion" or "lot" each tribe received in the land.
- Against the English
KJV, NASB, WEB and YLT have "part," and ESV "portion." BSB has "place," NIV turns it into "will be consigned," and NLT has "their fate." "Place" and "consigned" lose the language of inheritance and allotment.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Psalm 11:6 (LXX 10:6): "fire and sulfur… the portion (meris) of their cup." This is probably the closest Old Testament model for this verse. In Revelation 20:6 the blessed one "has a part (meros) in the first resurrection," and in 22:19 God will "take away his part (meros) from the tree of life." John 13:8 has "you have no part (meros) with me."
- Range of meaning
A part of a whole. More specifically, someone's share, portion, or lot: the share of an inheritance, plunder, or land; one's allotted place or destiny; a "side" or party you belong to. "To have a share with someone" (ἔχειν μέρος μετά τινος) means to be a partner with them, to share their lot.
- Against the English
BSB, KJV, WEB, NIV and NASB have "part with me". ESV and NRSV have "share with me". NLT paraphrases as "belong to me". "Part" is correct, but modern ears often hear "a role to play" ("you have no part in this") or "a piece". The Greek is about owning a stake in someone's inheritance and destiny.
- How it drifted
In modern English "have a part" usually means "take part, have a role". The older sense, a part as an allotted portion, has faded.
- Used elsewhere in the period
In the Greek Old Testament (Septuagint) this word group renders Hebrew ḥēleq, "portion". It is used for the Levites, who "have no portion (μερίς) or inheritance with their brothers; the LORD is their inheritance" (Deut 10:9; 12:12; 14:27). Later Jewish teaching says "all Israel has a share (ḥēleq) in the world to come" (Mishnah Sanhedrin 10:1). The NT uses μέρος the same way: the wicked servant's master "will put his portion with the hypocrites" (Matt 24:51); "blessed is the one who has a share in the first resurrection" (Rev 20:6); "their portion will be in the lake" (Rev 21:8); God "will take away his share in the tree of life" (Rev 22:19).
From the study of 1 Corinthians 12:27
- Range of meaning
μέρος means part, portion, share, or one's allotted role. The fixed phrase ἐκ μέρους means 'in part', 'partly' or 'individually, severally', with each item taken in turn. BDAG lists 1 Cor 12:27 under the 'individually' sense.
- Against the English
KJV and YLT have 'in particular', which in 1611 meant 'severally, one by one'. Modern readers hear 'especially', which is wrong. Modern versions say 'individually' (WEB, ESV, NASB) or 'each of you … a part/member of it' (BSB, NIV, NLT). These capture the one-by-one sense but can lose the 'only a part' nuance.
- How it drifted
In 1611 English 'in particular' was the opposite of 'in general' ('severally'). It has since become an intensifier ('I liked this one in particular').
- Used elsewhere in the period
In 13:9–12 Paul uses the same phrase three times: 'we know in part, we prophesy in part … then the partial will be done away'. Elsewhere in Koine papyri it occurs in the sense 'in part, partially'.

Now you are the body of Christ, and each of you is a member of it.
