In depth

From the study of Proverbs 18:13

Range of meaning

An adverb meaning 'not yet', and with the preposition bə- 'before (something happens)'. It stresses that the necessary first event has not yet taken place.

Against the English

'Before' is accurate. The Hebrew 'not yet' carries a slight sense that the hearing ought to have come first.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 2:5 ('no shrub had yet appeared'); Gen 24:15 ('before he had finished speaking', with Rebekah coming out); Isa 65:24 ('before they call, I will answer'). That last verse is a striking reversal: God's answering before the call is grace because he already knows. A human who does the same only shows that he does not know.

From the study of Isaiah 65:24

Range of meaning

An adverb meaning "not yet." With a verb it gives the sense "before X happens" (also as בְּטֶרֶם, beterem). Hebrew usually pairs it with the verb form that elsewhere marks incomplete action, whether the time is past or future. So it describes something that has not happened yet.

Against the English

Most versions render "before they call." YLT keeps the bare "not yet": "They do not yet call, and I answer." That makes the timing vivid: God's answer arrives while the calling still lies in the future.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 2:5 ("no shrub of the field was yet"). Gen 24:15 ("before he had finished speaking, Rebekah came out"), which is a close parallel: an answer to prayer arrives before the prayer is finished. Jer 1:5 ("before I formed you"). Isa 48:5 ("before it came to pass I told you"). Isaiah 40–66 often presents God as the one who speaks and acts before events happen.

From the study of Zephaniah 2:2

Range of meaning

Ṭerem means 'not yet'. With the preposition bə- ('in') it means 'before (something happens)'. It is normally followed directly by a verb. Adding lōʾ ('not') after it is found only in this verse, in two of its three clauses.

Against the English

Most English versions just say 'before', which is right. YLT's 'While yet not come' keeps the odd doubled negative and shows the 'not yet' flavour.

Used elsewhere in the period

Bəṭerem is common in narrative and poetry (e.g. Gen 2:5 'before any shrub was yet in the earth'; Isa 65:24 'before they call, I will answer'). Hebrew grammarians usually explain the extra lōʾ here as emphatic or pleonastic, meaning it adds weight, not meaning. It is like colloquial English 'before it hasn't even come yet'.

  4. Psalm 119:67 טֶ֣רֶם before

Before I was afflicted, I went astray; but now I keep Your word.

Here: Opens the 'before' half of a before-and-now contrast. Followed by a verb in the imperfect form, it points to the past: 'before it happened that I was brought low.' It also supplies the letter ט (teth) that every line of this eight-verse stanza must begin with.

Proverbs · 3
  1. Proverbs 8:25 בְּטֶ֣רֶם <in> before

Before the mountains were settled, before the hills, I was brought forth,

Here: The preposition bə- ("in, at") joined to ṭerem ("not yet"): literally "at the not-yet" of the mountains, the time when they did not exist. It is the same word used in the "when there was not yet" opening of the second creation account (Genesis 2:5).

Behold, the former things have happened, and now I declare new things. Before they spring forth I proclaim them to you.”

Here: "Before." The point of the whole verse sits here: the announcement comes before the event, so no one can claim afterward that they saw it coming on their own (compare 48:5–7).

  6. Isaiah 48:5 בְּטֶ֥רֶם <in> before

Therefore I declared it to you long ago; I announced it before it came to pass, so that you could not claim, ‘My idol has done this; my carved image and molten god has ordained it.’

“Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as a prophet to the nations.”

Here: Literally 'in the not-yet'. It sets the scene before anything about Jeremiah existed. In Hebrew it takes a verb that looks future ('before I form') even when the event lies in the past, so it means 'before I had formed you'.
