-
Genesis 29:30 מִלֵּאָ֑ה more than Leah
Jacob slept with Rachel as well, and indeed, he loved Rachel more than Leah. So he worked for Laban another seven years.
Here: Literally 'from Leah', the normal Hebrew way of saying 'more than'. Leah's name lands at the emphatic pause in the middle of the verse, and the next verse shows what this ranking cost her. The meaning of her name is uncertain; 'cow' and 'weary' are both proposed.
-
Genesis 29:31 לֵאָ֔ה Leah
When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
Here: Laban's older daughter, slipped into the marriage in place of Rachel (29:23-25). The name's meaning is uncertain: possibly 'cow' (compare Akkadian littu) or 'weary.'
-
Genesis 29:32 לֵאָה֙ Leah
And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son, and she named him Reuben, for she said, “The LORD has seen my affliction. Surely my husband will love me now.”
Here: Laban's older daughter. Jacob was tricked into marrying her (29:23–25), and the narrator has just said she was 'hated', meaning less loved than Rachel (29:30–31).
-
Genesis 30:9 לֵאָ֔ה Leah
When Leah saw that she had stopped having children, she gave her servant Zilpah to Jacob as a wife.
Here: Jacob's first wife, the less-loved older sister (29:30–31). She already has four sons (Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah), so she is not childless. The meaning of her name is uncertain: 'cow' (compare an Akkadian word) and 'weary' have both been suggested.
-
Genesis 30:10 לֵאָ֖ה Leah
And Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a son.
Here: Jacob's first and less-loved wife. Her name is attached to Zilpah's title, which shows that the birth counts toward Leah's side in her rivalry with Rachel.
-
Genesis 30:11 לֵאָ֖ה Leah
Then Leah said, “How fortunate!” So she named him Gad.
Here: Jacob's first wife, the less-loved one (29:30-31). Zilpah gave birth, but Leah does the naming, because a child born to a wife's slave-woman counted legally as the wife's own.
-
Genesis 30:12 לֵאָ֔ה Leah
When Leah’s servant Zilpah bore Jacob a second son,
Here: Jacob's first wife, Zilpah's owner. Naming her here shows whose side this birth counts for: it adds to Leah's tally against Rachel, and Leah is the one who names the boy (v.13).
