What it means

deceit, treachery

Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Proverbs 11:1

Range of meaning

Deceit, fraud, treachery, betrayal. It comes from a root meaning 'to deceive, betray' (rmh). It is used of Jacob's deception (Genesis 27:35), of treacherous speech (Psalm 10:7; 34:13), and of fraudulent trade (Hosea 12:7; Amos 8:5; Micah 6:11).

Against the English

'False' (KJV, ESV, WEB) can sound merely inaccurate, as if the scale were faulty. 'Dishonest' (BSB, NIV) or 'deceitful' gets closer: mirmâ always involves the intent to mislead.

Used elsewhere in the period

Proverbs uses the word repeatedly for the speech and plans of the wicked (12:5, 17, 20; 14:8, 25; 26:24). Micah 6:11 has the parallel phrase 'a bag of stones of deceit'. In the Septuagint (the ancient Greek translation) it becomes dolios, 'crafty, treacherous'.

From the study of Proverbs 14:8

Range of meaning

Deceit, deception, treachery, fraud. It is from the root rmh, which carries the sense of beguiling or betraying.

Against the English

KJV, WEB, YLT: "is deceit" (who is deceived is left open). BSB: "deceives them". The paraphrase NLT: fools "deceive themselves". Translations that specify the victim settle a question the Hebrew leaves open.

Used elsewhere in the period

In Proverbs mirmah usually means deceiving others: "scales of deceit", meaning dishonest scales (11:1; 20:23); "the counsels of the wicked are deceit" (12:5); "a false witness [utters] deceit" (12:17); "deceit is in the heart of those who plot evil" (12:20). Genesis 27:35 uses it of Jacob's trick on Isaac. The Greek Septuagint renders the line "the folly of fools is in error/wandering (planē)", which reads it as going astray.

From the study of Psalm 5:6

Range of meaning

Deceit, fraud, treachery, betrayal. It comes from a root meaning 'to deceive, betray' (Laban 'deceived' Jacob, Gen 29:25). It is used for crooked business ('scales of deceit', Prov 11:1; Hos 12:7), for treacherous negotiation (Gen 34:13), and for political betrayal (2 Kgs 9:23, 'Treachery, Ahaziah!').

Against the English

'Deceit' (BSB, ESV, NASB) and 'deceitful' (KJV, WEB) are accurate. NLT's 'deceivers' is fine too. The English word can sound mild, but mirmah often means betrayal that ends in someone's ruin.

Used elsewhere in the period

It is paired with damim again in Ps 55:23. Psalm 10:7 has the wicked man's 'mouth full of curses and deceit'. Psalm 34:13 says 'keep your lips from speaking deceit' (mirmah). Isaiah 53:9 says of the servant that there was 'no deceit in his mouth'.
