In depth

From the study of Genesis 20:17

Range of meaning

A female slave. Often she is a woman in the household who could become a secondary wife or bear children to the master (Genesis 21:10, 12–13, where Hagar is called ʾāmāh; Exodus 21:7–11; Judges 9:18). The near-synonym šifḥāh (used in 20:14 for the slave women given to Abraham) also means female slave. Some scholars (A. Jepsen, 1958) argue that šifḥāh points more to a lowly servant girl and ʾāmāh more to a slave woman with a recognized place in the family. The two overlap a great deal, so the distinction is debated.

Against the English

BSB and KJV say "maidservants" and YLT says "handmaids," which to modern ears suggests hired domestic staff. WEB has "female servants." Several modern versions say "female slaves," which is closer to the legal status.

How it drifted

"Maid/servant" now means paid, voluntary work. In the ancient Near East, an ʾāmāh was owned property, and her children added to the master's household.

Used elsewhere in the period

The Septuagint has paidiskas (slave girls). Ancient Near Eastern law collections, such as the Code of Hammurabi §§144–147, deal with slave women bearing children for the household.

From the study of 1 Samuel 25:28

Range of meaning

Female servant or slave. It is used in polite speech by women of themselves ('your maidservant' = 'I'). It overlaps with shiphḥāh, another word for female servant.

Against the English

BSB has 'servant', which loses the gender. KJV and YLT have 'handmaid', which is archaic but accurate. WEB has 'servant'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Hannah uses both words of herself before Eli and before Yahweh (1 Sam 1:11, 16, 18). Abigail uses shiphḥāh in v.27 and ʾāmāh here, and both together in v.41.

From the study of 1 Samuel 25:24

Range of meaning

Female slave or servant, a woman who belongs to a household under a master. The word could also describe a woman with a socially recognised bond to a man, including a secondary wife (Genesis 20:17, 21:10). It is also a standard self-description by a woman speaking to a superior, whether human or divine.

Against the English

KJV and YLT say 'handmaid', and NASB says 'maidservant', which keep the gender. BSB and WEB say 'servant', which is good modern English but hides that she is speaking specifically as a woman of a household.

How it drifted

'Handmaid' is now archaic and tends to sound pious or decorative. 'Servant' can suggest paid domestic staff or general humility. Neither carries the ancient picture of a woman placing herself under the authority and protection of a household's head.

Used elsewhere in the period

Hannah uses it of herself before Eli and before God (1 Samuel 1:11, 16), and Ruth uses it to Boaz (Ruth 3:9). The tomb inscription of a royal steward at Silwan near Jerusalem refers to 'his amah with him', and a post-exilic seal gives the title to a woman named Shelomith, so the word was not always low in status. Alfred Jepsen argued in 1958 that amah ranks above shiphchah, the other word for a slave woman, although the distinction is not sharp.
