Range of meaning

'Eder is a flock or herd of sheep or goats. Shavah means to take people (or animals) captive in war. The niphal stem used here is passive: "be taken captive".

Against the English

KJV has "is carried away captive". BSB and WEB have "has been taken captive". The perfect tense is kept as something already finished.

Used elsewhere in the period

The flock image for Israel: Mic 2:12; Zech 10:3 ("the LORD of hosts cares for his flock"); Jer 13:20; 23:1–4 (shepherds who scatter the flock). Being taken captive in war: Gen 14:14; 2 Kgs 24:14–16.

From the study of Jeremiah 13:20

Range of meaning

ʿĒder is a herd or flock as a gathered unit (from a root meaning to arrange or gather). Ṣōʾn is the general word for small livestock, sheep and goats together.

Against the English

KJV/WEB 'flock… flock', YLT 'drove… flock', BSB 'flock… sheep'. All are accurate. Note that 'sheep' in Hebrew usually takes in goats too.

Used elsewhere in the period

Kings and leaders as shepherds is an ancient Near Eastern commonplace (Hammurabi calls himself 'the shepherd'). It is also standard in the prophets (Jer 10:21; 23:1–4; 25:34–36; Ezek 34; Zech 11).
