In depth

From the study of Genesis 16:2

Range of meaning

To hold back, restrain, shut in, detain, stop. It covers physical detention (Judg 13:15–16, "let us detain you"), a plague being stopped (Num 16:48–50), and especially God shutting off a source of life: the heavens "shut up" so there is no rain (Deut 11:17; 1 Kgs 8:35) and the womb "shut" so there is no birth (Gen 20:18; Isa 66:9).

Against the English

"Restrained" (KJV, WEB, YLT) and "prevented" (BSB) are accurate. "Kept me from having children" (NIV, NLT style) is fine too. All of them can sound abstract, while the Hebrew picture is of something closed off, like a sky that holds back its rain.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 20:18 uses the same verb doubled for emphasis: "Yahweh had firmly shut every womb" in Abimelech's house. Isa 66:9 sets God as the one who "causes to bear" against God as the one who "shuts." Elsewhere in the Bible the same God-controls-fertility idea is said with sagar ("close"), as with Hannah in 1 Sam 1:5–6. Fertility in the gift of the deity is also a common idea across the ancient Near East.

From the study of Deuteronomy 32:36

Range of meaning

Two passive participles: 'one held back / shut in / restrained' and 'one left / released / abandoned'. Together they form a fixed pair that names two opposite groups to mean 'everyone'. The exact two groups are disputed (see debates): slave and free, minors and adults, people confined and people at large, people sheltered by kin and people left unprotected, and others.

Against the English

KJV has 'none shut up, or left', which is literal but hard to follow. WEB has 'shut up or left at large'. YLT has 'restrained and left'. BSB, NIV, ESV, NASB and NLT read it as 'slave or free' / 'bond or free', a guess about what the pair refers to.

How it drifted

There is no drift in the usual sense. The phrase was already an idiom whose literal picture had faded, and translators have to decide what it pointed to.

Used elsewhere in the period

The same pair appears in 1 Kgs 14:10, 21:21 and 2 Kgs 9:8, where it means wiping out every male of a royal house. It also appears in 2 Kgs 14:26: 'Yahweh saw the affliction of Israel... there was none shut up or left, and no helper for Israel.' That verse clearly echoes this one, with the same seeing, the same total loss and the same rescue.

From the study of Daniel 10:16

Range of meaning

‘atsar means to hold back, restrain, shut up, retain. With koach (strength) it is an idiom of late Biblical Hebrew: “to keep or have strength.”

Against the English

KJV and WEB “retain no strength” keep the sense of failing to hold on to strength. BSB “I have no strength” is clear but flattens it.

Used elsewhere in the period

Daniel 10:8 and 11:6; 1 Chronicles 29:14; 2 Chronicles 2:6; 13:20; 22:9. The phrase occurs almost only in late books.

Here: "He has shut me up / held me back." The perfect verb presents her barrenness as a settled fact. She sees God as actively keeping her from bearing, not merely as allowing it, using the same verb Genesis uses when God "shuts" wombs in 20:18.

  2. Deuteronomy 32:36 עָצ֥וּר [is] shut up

Here: The preposition 'in' plus a passive verbal noun: 'in the being-held-back of', meaning 'when … is shut up'. The sky is pictured as a store of water that has been closed off and kept back.

  2. 1 Kings 14:10 עָצ֥וּר shut up

  2. 2 Kings 9:8 וְעָצ֥וּר and shut up

The whole house of Ahab will perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male, both slave and free, in Israel.

Here: A passive form, 'one who is restrained.' It is the first half of a fixed rhyming pair. The exact contrast is debated (slave/free, minor/adult, ritually confined/unconfined, and others). Together the pair means 'everyone, whatever his status.'

  3. 2 Kings 14:26 עָצוּר֙ [was] shut up

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? For everything comes from You, and from Your own hand we have given to You.

Here: Literally 'we should hold on to' or 'keep in reserve.' The imperfect form gives a sense of possibility: 'that we could have it in us.' With 'strength' it is a late Hebrew idiom for being able.

2 Chronicles · 7
  1. 2 Chronicles 2:6 יַעֲצָר־ will he retain

But who is able to build a house for Him, since the heavens, even the highest heavens, cannot contain Him? Who then am I, that I should build a house for Him, except as a place to burn sacrifices before Him?

Here: Short for the idiom 'retain strength', meaning to keep one's power or hold one's ground. 'Let him not hold [strength] against you' means 'do not let him prevail'. It quietly echoes 'no strength' from the first line.

  6. 2 Chronicles 20:37 עָצְר֖וּ they retained

Here: "And it was held back." The passive leaves the one doing the holding unnamed (God, by implication). The wording repeats Numbers 25:8 word for word, and the same phrase is used when Aaron stopped a plague in Numbers 17:13–15 (16:48–50 in English Bibles).

Isaiah · 1
