In depth
From the study of Genesis 1:19
- Range of meaning
'Fourth,' the ordinal number from ʾarbaʿ, 'four.' It can also mean 'a fourth part' or 'the fourth generation.'
- Against the English
Most English versions say 'the fourth day.' The Hebrew has no article on either word ('day fourth'). The WEB, NASB and YLT keep this as 'a fourth day' or 'day fourth.'
- Used elsewhere in the period
Genesis 1 builds up its use of the article. Day 1 is yom ʾeḥad, 'one day' or 'day one.' Days 2–5 have no article. Day 6 is yom ha-shishi, with the article on the number. Day 7 is ha-yom ha-shevi'i, with the article on both words. The LXX keeps the plain form here: hēmera tetartē.
