In depth

From the study of Proverbs 21:30

Range of meaning

Understanding, discernment, insight; the ability to tell things apart (from bîn, 'between'). Used of the skill of craftsmen (Exod 31:3; 1 Kgs 7:14), of a ruler's judgement (Prov 28:16), and of God's understanding by which he 'stretched out the heavens' (Jer 10:12; Prov 3:19).

Against the English

'Understanding' in English can mean simply grasping an idea or being sympathetic ('she was very understanding'). Təbûnâ is closer to analytical skill: seeing how a situation fits together and what to do about it.

Used elsewhere in the period

Often paired with ḥokmâ as a fixed couple (Prov 2:2; 3:19; 5:1; Exod 31:3; 1 Kgs 4:29 [5:9 Heb.]). Wisdom herself claims it: 'I am understanding' (Prov 8:14). The Septuagint here unusually translates it andreia, 'courage'.

From the study of Proverbs 2:11

Range of meaning

From bin, 'to discern, distinguish' (related to bein, 'between'). Tevunah is discernment, insight and practical competence: knowing how to separate the right from the wrong, the safe from the dangerous, and how to act on it. It also covers skill, including craft skill. God made the heavens 'by tevunah' (Prov 3:19; Jer 10:12; Ps 136:5), and Bezalel the tabernacle craftsman was filled with it (Exod 31:3).

Against the English

English 'understanding' usually means grasping an idea, and sometimes being sympathetic ('she's very understanding'). The Hebrew word is more practical and more skilled: the competence of someone who can read a situation and handle it well.

How it drifted

Mild. 'Understanding' is a reasonable gloss, but modern English treats it as something that happens in the head. Hebrew tevunah is knowing-how, shown in what you do.

Used elsewhere in the period

It stands alongside chokmah (wisdom) and daʿat (knowledge) throughout Proverbs (2:2, 2:3, 2:6, 3:13, 3:19–20). The Septuagint here renders it ennoia hosia, 'holy (devout) thought', again adding a word that gives it a moral quality.

From the study of Proverbs 14:29

Range of meaning

Discernment, insight, practical competence. It comes from the root bin, "to distinguish, perceive between". It is used of God's skill in creation (Prov 3:19; Jer 10:12), of a craftsman's skill (Exod 31:3; 1 Kgs 7:14), and of the wise person's ability to read a situation (Prov 10:23; 17:27; 18:2).

Against the English

"Understanding" is an accurate rendering. Modern readers may hear it as intellectual comprehension. In Hebrew it is closer to skilled judgement in action.

Used elsewhere in the period

Often paired with ḥokhmah ("wisdom") in Proverbs (2:2; 3:13, 19; 5:1). Prov 17:27: "cool of spirit is a man of tevunah". This is a close parallel linking a calm temper with discernment.
