In depth

From the study of 1 John 4:20

Range of meaning

Liar, someone who speaks falsehood. In John's writings it is a moral and spiritual category: the devil is 'a liar and the father of lies' (John 8:44), and lying means being on the side opposed to the truth.

Against the English

English 'liar' can sound like a heated insult or just someone who said something untrue. John means that the person's whole claim to belong to God is false. He is not judging how sincere the person feels.

Used elsewhere in the period

1 John 1:10 (making God a liar); 2:4 ('Whoever says "I know him" but does not keep his commandments is a liar'); 2:22 ('Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ?'); 5:10.

From the study of 1 John 2:4

Range of meaning

A liar, one who speaks falsely. In John's writings it also means someone aligned with the realm of falsehood, the opposite of truth.

Against the English

"Liar" is accurate. English readers may hear only "someone who deliberately tells a lie". John's usage also covers someone whose claim is untrue whether or not he realizes it.

Used elsewhere in the period

John 8:44 (the devil is "a liar and the father of it"); John 8:55 (Jesus: "if I said I do not know him, I would be a liar like you"). That second text is a close parallel: knowing God is linked to keeping his word. Also 1 John 1:10; 2:22; 4:20 ("If anyone says 'I love God' and hates his brother, he is a liar"); 5:10.

From the study of 1 John 1:10

Range of meaning

A liar: someone who says what is false, especially on purpose. In John's writings it carries moral and spiritual weight. The devil is 'a liar and the father of lies' (John 8:44). Whoever denies that Jesus is the Christ is 'the liar' (1 John 2:22). Whoever claims to love God but hates his brother is a liar (4:20).

Against the English

English 'liar' is accurate. The force comes from where it is placed: first in the clause, and applied to God.

Used elsewhere in the period

Numbers 23:19 (Septuagint) says God is not like a human being that he should lie. Titus 1:2 calls God 'who cannot lie' (ἀψευδής). 1 John 5:10 uses the same phrase: whoever does not believe God 'has made him a liar,' because he has not believed God's testimony about his Son.

Where it appears

John · 2
  1. John 8:44 ψεύστης a liar

You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out his desires. He was a murderer from the beginning, refusing to uphold the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, because he is a liar and the father of lies.

Here: A label for a person: someone who is a liar by nature, not someone who told one lie.

  2. John 8:55 ψεύστης· a liar;

You do not know Him, but I know Him. If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you. But I do know Him, and I keep His word.

Here: A noun, not a verb: not 'I would be lying' but 'I would be a liar', a person defined by falsehood. It reuses the word from 8:44, where the devil is 'a liar and the father of it'.

Romans · 1
  1. Romans 3:4 ψεύστης a liar

Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You speak and victorious when You judge.”

Here: Someone who speaks falsely, and by extension someone who cannot be relied on. It is the opposite of 'true', and here it echoes the 'unfaithfulness' of verse 3.

1 Timothy · 1
  1. 1 Timothy 1:10 ψεύσταις, for liars,

for the sexually immoral, for homosexuals, for slave traders and liars and perjurers, and for anyone else who is averse to sound teaching

Here: A person who habitually speaks falsehood. With the next word it stands for the commandment against bearing false witness.

Titus · 1
  1. Titus 1:12 ψεῦσται, liars,

As one of their own prophets has said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

1 John · 5
  1. 1 John 1:10 ψεύστην a liar

If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar, and His word is not in us.

Here: Placed first in its clause for emphasis: 'a liar is what we make him.' It is a shocking word to use of God, and that is the point.

  2. 1 John 2:4 ψεύστης a liar

If anyone says, “I know Him,” but does not keep His commandments, he is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Here: A liar, someone whose words do not match reality. The word comes first in its clause for emphasis: "a LIAR he is." In John's writings the word also places a person on the side of falsehood (John 8:44).

  3. 1 John 2:22 ψεύστης liar

Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.

Here: A liar. In John's writings this means someone who belongs to the realm of falsehood, the opposite of 'the truth' that the readers know (v. 21). It is more than someone who has made a mistaken statement.

  4. 1 John 4:20 ψεύστης a liar

If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother, he is a liar. For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.

Here: A blunt label. Not just 'mistaken': his claim is false, and in this letter liars line up against the truth (2:4, 22).

  5. 1 John 5:10 ψεύστην a liar

Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony within him; whoever does not believe God has made Him out to be a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has given about His Son.

Here: Placed first in its clause for emphasis: 'a LIAR he has made him'. To refuse a witness's sworn statement is to treat the witness as false.
