Range of meaning

Joppa / Jaffa (Hebrew Yafo), an ancient harbor town on the Mediterranean coast, about 55 km (35 miles) northwest of Jerusalem.

Against the English

'Joppe' (Brenton) and 'Joppa' (KJV, WEB) are just different spellings.

Used elsewhere in the period

Cedars for the temple were shipped through it (2 Chr 2:16; Ezra 3:7). Jonah sails from it (Jonah 1:3). It changed hands repeatedly in Maccabees: Jonathan took it (1 Macc 10:75–76), Simon garrisoned it (12:33–34), and later Simon made it Judea's harbor and settled Jews there (14:5, 34). 2 Macc 12:3–7 tells of Joppa's citizens drowning their Jewish neighbors and Judas raiding the harbor in reprisal.
