Abridged from Brown, Driver and Briggs, A Hebrew and English Lexicon of the Old Testament (1906), via STEPBible.org (CC BY 4.0).

In depth

From the study of Genesis 13:9

Range of meaning

Left and right hand or side. People oriented themselves facing east (qedem, 'front', also means east), so the right hand pointed south and the left hand pointed north. Yamin also carries ideas of strength and favour (the 'right hand').

Against the English

English versions all say 'left/right'. That is correct, but a modern reader takes it as 'sideways, either direction' and misses that each word was also a compass point.

How it drifted

English 'left' and 'right' have no built-in compass meaning.

Used elsewhere in the period

Genesis 14:15: Hobah lies 'on the left of Damascus', meaning north of it. Job 23:9 sets 'left' against 'right' as north and south. Place names include Teman ('south') and Benjamin ('son of the right/south'). Arabic Yemen ('right') and Sham/Syria ('left' or north) work the same way.

From the study of Ezekiel 16:46

Range of meaning

Left hand or left side; right hand or right side. In Hebrew direction words these also mean north (left) and south (right), because the speaker faces east toward the sunrise. The word for east, qedem, means 'front', and the word for west, ʾaḥor, can mean 'behind'.

Against the English

KJV, WEB and YLT keep 'left hand… right hand'. A modern reader may hear a ranking of honour (right is favoured, left is not) or a picture of the cities standing beside Jerusalem. BSB, NIV, ESV and NASB give 'north… south', which is the geographical sense.

How it drifted

English does not use 'right' and 'left' for compass directions. In Christian tradition, 'right hand' means a place of favour (Matt 25:33).

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 14:15 has 'Hobah, which is on the left of Damascus' = north of Damascus. Job 23:8–9 runs through front, back, left and right as east, west, north and south. Yemen ('the right' land) is the land to the south. In Josh 17:7 and 1 Sam 23:19, 24 'the right' means the south.

From the study of Joshua 19:27

Range of meaning

Left hand or left side. As a direction, 'the north', because the speaker is pictured facing east, toward the sunrise. In the same system 'right' (yamin) means south, 'front' (qedem) means east and 'behind' (achor) means west.

Against the English

KJV, WEB and YLT keep 'on the left (hand)', and BSB has 'passing Cabul on the left'. Modern readers naturally hear this as left relative to someone walking the line. ESV renders it as a compass point ('in the north'), which brings out the likely sense.

How it drifted

English 'left' is purely relative to whoever is facing which way. In Hebrew, 'left' could also be a fixed compass direction tied to facing east. The literal English keeps the word but loses that fixed point of reference.

Used elsewhere in the period

Gen 14:15: Hobah 'on the left of Damascus' means north of Damascus. Ezek 16:46: Samaria, which lies north of Jerusalem, 'dwells at your left'. Job 23:9 and 1 Kgs 7:39 also use left and right for north and south. The same east-facing orientation is widespread among West Semitic peoples. In Arabic, Yemen ('the right') is south and Sham/Syria ('the left') is north.

Where it appears

Genesis · 6
  1. Genesis 13:9 הַשְּׂמֹ֣אל the left

Is not the whole land before you? Now separate yourself from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left.”

Here: 'The left'. In Israel's way of giving directions you faced east, so 'left' also meant north. Standing near Bethel, that would most naturally be the land to the north.

  2. Genesis 14:15 מִשְּׂמֹ֖אל [is] from [the] north

During the night, Abram divided his forces and routed Chedorlaomer’s army, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.

  3. Genesis 24:49 שְׂמֹֽאל׃ left

Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master, tell me; but if not, let me know, so that I may go elsewhere.”

and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

Here: "And on their left." Right and left together mean 'on both sides': Israel is fully enclosed and fully protected.

  2. Exodus 14:29 וּמִשְּׂמֹאלָֽם and from left their

But the Israelites had walked through the sea on dry ground, with walls of water on their right and on their left.

Numbers · 2
  1. Numbers 20:17 וּשְׂמֹ֔אול and left

So be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or to the left.

  3. Deuteronomy 17:11 וּשְׂמֹֽאל׃ and left [hand]

according to the terms of law they give and the verdict they proclaim. Do not turn aside to the right or to the left from the decision they declare to you.

Then his heart will not be exalted above his countrymen, and he will not turn aside from the commandment, to the right or to the left, in order that he and his sons may reign many years over his kingdom in Israel.

Here: 'Or left'. Together with 'right' it means no turning off the road in either direction, however small. The same phrase is used for the people in 5:32 and 28:14, so the king is bound by exactly the standard every Israelite is.

  5. Deuteronomy 28:14 וּשְׂמֹ֑אול and left [hand]

Do not turn aside to the right or to the left from any of the words I command you today, and do not go after other gods to serve them.

then turned eastward toward Beth-dagon, touched Zebulun and the Valley of Iphtah-el, and went north to Beth-emek and Neiel, passing Cabul on the left.

Here: Literally 'from the left'. Israelites took their bearings facing east, so 'left' regularly meant north. The phrase most likely means the line passes Cabul on its north side, not on a traveller's left hand.

  3. Joshua 23:6 וּשְׂמֹֽאול׃ and left [hand]

Be very strong, then, so that you can keep and obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses, not turning aside from it to the right or to the left.

Here: "And left." Naming both sides is a way of saying "in any direction at all." No deviation of any kind is allowed.

Then Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. Here: 'The left,' and by the east-facing orientation also the north. With 'right', it shows the grabbing reaching in every direction. The text spells it here with an extra vowel letter (ו), a variant spelling with no difference in meaning.

  2. Isaiah 54:3 וּשְׂמֹ֖אול and left

For you will spread out to the right and left; your descendants will dispossess the nations and inhabit the desolate cities.

Here: "And left" (also the north when facing east). Put with "right", the pair means "in every direction, on both sides". The extra vowel letter in the spelling changes nothing.

The form of their faces was that of a man, and each of the four had the face of a lion on the right side, the face of an ox on the left side, and also the face of an eagle.

Here: 'From the left', i.e. on the left side. The Hebrew is unusual: the preposition is written out before the article, and 'left' is spelled with an extra letter.

  2. Ezekiel 16:46 שְׂמֹאולֵ֑ךְ north your

Your older sister was Samaria, who lived with her daughters to your north; and your younger sister was Sodom, who lived with her daughters to your south.

Here: 'And his left' (literally 'to his left', a usual way to finish a 'between' phrase). The whole phrase pictures people with no means of telling one way from the other: helpless, unknowing, unable to steer themselves.

Zechariah · 3
