In depth

From the study of Luke 18:9

Range of meaning

Remaining, left over. With the article, 'the rest, all the others'.

Against the English

KJV/BSB/ESV 'others' loses the article and the sense of a whole category. WEB 'all others', NIV 'everyone else' and YLT 'the rest' keep it.

Used elsewhere in the period

Common Greek. The key parallel is inside the parable itself: v.11, 'I thank you that I am not like the rest of people (hoi loipoi tōn anthrōpōn)'.

From the study of Romans 11:7

Range of meaning

Remaining, left over; as a noun, 'the rest, the others'. From the verb leipō, 'leave', the same root as leimma, 'remnant' (11:5), and hypoleimma (9:27).

Against the English

'The rest' (KJV, ESV, WEB, YLT) or 'the others' (BSB, NIV). Both are accurate, but English cannot show the echo with 'remnant'.

Used elsewhere in the period

Very common. The remnant language comes from the prophets (Isa 10:20–22, quoted at 9:27) and from 1 Kgs 19:18 LXX, which Paul cites in v. 4 ('I have left for myself [katelipon] seven thousand').

From the study of Acts 5:13

Range of meaning

"Remaining, left over". As a plural noun with the article, "the rest, the others": whoever is left once a group has been named.

Against the English

KJV, YLT, WEB, ESV and NASB keep "the rest". BSB, NIV and NLT make it "no one else", which reads smoothly but hides how vague the Greek is about who "the rest" were.

Used elsewhere in the period

Luke uses οἱ λοιποί for "the others" over against a named group, e.g. Luke 8:10 ("to the rest in parables"), Luke 18:9, 11, Acts 2:37 ("the rest of the apostles").

but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.

Luke · 6
  1. Luke 8:10 λοιποῖς rest

He replied, “The knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to others I speak in parables, so that, ‘though seeing, they may not see; though hearing, they may not understand.’

Here: 'The rest': the large crowd from the towns (8:4) who heard the story but did not ask what it meant. Luke's phrase is gentler than Mark's 'those outside' (Mark 4:11).

  2. Luke 12:26 λοιπῶν rest

So if you cannot do such a small thing, why do you worry about the rest?

  3. Luke 18:9 λοιποὺς others

To some who trusted in their own righteousness and viewed others with contempt, He also told this parable:

Here: 'The rest': everyone outside their own circle. It anticipates the Pharisee's words in v.11, 'I am not like the rest (hoi loipoi) of people.' The world is split into 'us, the righteous' and 'the rest'.

  4. Luke 18:11 λοιποὶ rest

The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.

It was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles.

Here: Feminine plural, "the remaining women". The group of witnesses was larger than the three named. It echoes v. 9, where they reported "to all the rest" (tois loipois).

Acts · 5
  1. Acts 2:37 λοιποὺς other

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and asked Peter and the other apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?”

Here: 'The rest.' It recalls that Peter stood up 'with the eleven' (2:14). He spoke as part of a group of witnesses, not alone.

  2. Acts 5:13 λοιπῶν rest

Although the people regarded them highly, no one else dared to join them.

Here: "The rest", meaning those not already part of the gathered group. Luke does not say exactly who they are, and scholars debate it (see debates).

  3. Acts 17:9 λοιπῶν rest

And they collected bond from Jason and the others and then released them.

  4. Acts 27:44 λοιποὺς rest

Romans · 2
  1. Romans 1:13 λοιποῖς other

I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, how often I planned to come to you (but have been prevented from visiting until now), in order that I might have a harvest among you, just as I have had among the other Gentiles.

Here: 'The rest of the' nations. The wording counts the Romans as one of the nations under Paul's commission.

  2. Romans 11:7 λοιποὶ rest

What then? What Israel was seeking, it failed to obtain, but the elect did. The others were hardened,

Here: 'The rest, the others', the Israelites outside the chosen remnant. It shares a root with leimma, 'remnant' (v. 5): both mean 'what is left over'. So there is a wordplay: the 'left-over' remnant obtained it, and the 'left-over' rest were hardened.

1 Corinthians · 4
  1. 1 Corinthians 7:12 λοιποῖς rest

To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.

  2. 1 Corinthians 9:5 λοιποὶ other

Have we no right to take along a believing wife, as do the other apostles and the Lord’s brothers and Cephas?

Here: "The rest of the apostles": the apostles other than Paul and Barnabas. It is a general statement about the usual practice and need not mean every last apostle was married.

  3. 1 Corinthians 11:34 λοιπὰ the other things

If anyone is hungry, he should eat at home, so that when you come together it will not result in judgment. And when I come, I will give instructions about the remaining matters.

  4. 1 Corinthians 15:37 λοιπῶν· rest;

  2. 2 Corinthians 13:2 λοιποῖς rest

I already warned you the second time I was with you. So now in my absence I warn those who sinned earlier and everyone else: If I return, I will not spare anyone,

Here: "The others." Most likely the wider congregation, including anyone who has fallen into the sins listed in 12:20 since then. Everyone is put on notice, not just the original offenders.

Galatians · 1
  1. Galatians 2:13 λοιποὶ rest

The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray.

Here: 'The rest'. It suggests that most or all of the Jewish members of the Antioch church went along, which left the Gentile believers eating on their own.

Ephesians · 1
  1. Ephesians 2:3 λοιποί.¶ rest.

All of us also lived among them at one time, fulfilling the cravings of our flesh and indulging its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature children of wrath.

Here: "The rest": the rest of humanity, or (if "we" means Jewish believers) the Gentiles. Paul uses the same phrase for outsiders in 1 Thess 4:13 and 5:6.

Philippians · 2
  1. Philippians 1:13 λοιποῖς rest

As a result, it has become clear throughout the whole palace guard and to everyone else that I am in chains for Christ.

Here: 'The rest,' meaning everyone else connected with Paul's case or in contact with him: officials, visitors, other prisoners, the wider local population. The form could in theory mean 'places' (KJV), but the context favours people.

  2. Philippians 4:3 λοιπῶν rest

Yes, and I ask you, my true yokefellow, to help these women who have contended at my side for the gospel, along with Clement and the rest of my fellow workers, whose names are in the Book of Life.

Here: 'The rest of my co-workers.' The word implies that the people already named, the women included, belong to that group of co-workers.

1 Thessalonians · 2
  1. 1 Thessalonians 4:13 λοιποὶ rest

Brothers, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who are without hope.

Here: "The rest": everyone outside the believing community, here mainly the city's non-Christian neighbours, the circle these converts had just left (1:9). The same label appears in 5:6.

  2. 1 Thessalonians 5:6 λοιποὶ others

So then, let us not sleep as the others do, but let us remain awake and sober.

Here: 'The rest' is the same phrase Paul used in 4:13 for 'the rest, who have no hope'. It names everyone outside the community of faith, people who belong to the night and are not expecting the Day.

1 Timothy · 1
  1. 1 Timothy 5:20 λοιποὶ rest

But those who persist in sin should be rebuked in front of everyone, so that the others will stand in fear of sin.

Here: 'The rest' or 'the others'. If the sinners are elders, the most natural sense is the other elders, though the whole church may be included. The word recalls 'the rest' in Deuteronomy 19:20, which follows the two-or-three-witnesses law quoted in v. 19.

2 Peter · 1
  1. 2 Peter 3:16 λοιπὰς other

He writes this way in all his letters, speaking in them about such matters. Some parts of his letters are hard to understand, which ignorant and unstable people distort, as they do the rest of the Scriptures, to their own destruction.

Here: 'The rest of', which normally means the rest of the same category. Paul's letters are counted with 'the Scriptures'.

Revelation · 8
  1. Revelation 2:24 λοιποῖς rest

But I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned the so-called deep things of Satan: I will place no further burden upon you

Here: The rest of the congregation, the ones not caught up in Jezebel's circle. It suggests a faithful group that remains, not necessarily a small one.

  2. Revelation 3:2 λοιπὰ that remain

Wake up and strengthen what remains, which is about to die; for I have found your deeds incomplete in the sight of My God.

Here: "What is left over." It is neuter and general ("things"), so it can take in whatever is still alive in the church, both people and any faithfulness that remains. Verse 4 shows there are still "a few names" in Sardis.

  3. Revelation 8:13 λοιπῶν remaining

And as I observed, I heard an eagle flying overhead, calling in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to those who dwell on the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the remaining three angels!”

Here: The trumpets still left in the series of seven: four have sounded and three are to come. The word splits the trumpets into a 4 + 3 pattern.

  4. Revelation 9:20 λοιποὶ rest

Now the rest of mankind who were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the works of their hands. They did not stop worshiping demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood, which cannot see or hear or walk.

Here: The two-thirds of humanity not killed (9:15, 18 say a third died). These are survivors, and that sets up the expectation that they will respond.

  5. Revelation 11:13 λοιποὶ rest

And in that hour there was a great earthquake, and a tenth of the city collapsed. Seven thousand were killed in the quake, and the rest were terrified and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Here: The survivors, nine-tenths of the city. The same word in 9:20 described 'the rest of mankind' who did not repent; here 'the rest' respond very differently.

  6. Revelation 12:17 λοιπῶν rest

And the dragon was enraged at the woman and went to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. And the dragon stood on the shore of the sea.

Here: 'The rest' or 'the others' of her offspring. Her other children besides the male child, the Messiah (12:5), who has already been taken up to God.

  7. Revelation 19:21 λοιποὶ rest

And the rest were killed with the sword that proceeded from the mouth of the One seated on the horse. And all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

Here: Everyone left once the beast and false prophet are removed: the 'kings of the earth and their armies' gathered in 19:19, and the 'all, free and slave, small and great' of 19:18. It means the leftovers of the enemy side, not a faithful 'remnant'.

  8. Revelation 20:5 λοιποὶ rest

The rest of the dead did not come back to life until the thousand years were complete. This is the first resurrection.

Here: 'The rest, the others.' It sets up a contrast with those who came to life in verse 4. Who exactly makes up 'the rest' depends on how widely you read verse 4's group (see debates).
