In depth
From the study of Ezekiel 43:25
- Range of meaning
Literally "hairy one," from seʿar (hair). It is the ordinary word for a he-goat, often in the full form seʿir ʿizzim ("hairy one of the goats"). The same word also names a desert creature or goat-demon (Lev 17:7; Isa 13:21), but nothing of that sense is present here.
- Against the English
"Goat" (KJV, WEB, YLT) or "male goat" (BSB). The BSB is more precise: the word is masculine and refers to an adult male.
- Used elsewhere in the period
The male goat is the purification offering of a tribal leader (nasiʾ, Lev 4:22–24), the people's purification offering at the start of each month and at festivals (Num 28–29), and the two goats of the Day of Atonement (Lev 16). Ezekiel himself uses it again for the festival offerings in 45:23.
From the study of Ezekiel 43:22
- Range of meaning
Śāʿîr means 'hairy, shaggy,' and as a noun 'he-goat.' The same word is used of goat-demons in Lev 17:7 and Isa 13:21, which shows how closely it was tied to the shaggy animal. The fixed phrase śəʿîr ʿizzîm, 'he-goat of goats,' is the Torah's standard description of a male goat for the ḥaṭṭāʾt.
- Against the English
KJV 'a kid of the goats' suggests a young goat, but the Hebrew word says nothing about age. BSB, WEB, NIV and ESV correctly have 'male goat.'
- How it drifted
'Kid' was the King James translators' choice for this word in several places. It narrows a word about the animal's sex (and its shaggy coat) into a word about age.
- Used elsewhere in the period
In Lev 4:22–24 a male goat is the ḥaṭṭāʾt of a tribal leader (nāśîʾ). Two male goats serve on the Day of Atonement (Lev 16:5–22). At the first dedication of the altar each chief brought 'one he-goat for a ḥaṭṭāʾt' (Num 7). A he-goat ḥaṭṭāʾt is required at every new moon and festival (Num 28–29).
From the study of Leviticus 16:21
- Range of meaning
Śāʿîr: 'hairy one', a male goat, the standard animal for purification offerings (Lev 4:23; 9:3; 16:5). The plural śəʿîrîm also names goat-like wilderness beings to which some Israelites sacrificed (Lev 17:7; 2 Chr 11:15; Isa 13:21; 34:14). Ḥay: living, alive.
- Against the English
English readers know this animal as 'the scapegoat'. That word comes from Tyndale's 1530 translation of v. 8 ('escape goat'). The Hebrew of this verse just says 'the living goat'.
- How it drifted
In modern English a 'scapegoat' is an innocent person unfairly blamed so that the guilty can avoid responsibility. That is close to the opposite of this rite, where the guilty people openly admit their sins.
- Used elsewhere in the period
Elimination rites with animals are known from the Hittite world (e.g., the rituals of Ashella and Uhhamuwa, which send a ram or ewe carrying plague into enemy territory) and from Ebla (a goat sent to the steppe of Alini). Leviticus has no deity receiving the goat as a gift. Mishnah Yoma 6:4–6 describes how, in later practice, the goat was led to a cliff and pushed off.

Genesis 27:11 שָׂעִ֔ר hairy
Jacob answered his mother Rebekah, “Look, my brother Esau is a hairy man, but I am smooth-skinned.
Here: Literally 'hairy', describing Esau's body. The word sounds almost the same as śāʿîr, 'goat' (literally 'hairy one'), and as Seir, the hill country where Esau's descendants, Edom, would live (32:3; 36:8). That sound links ahead to v. 16, where goatskins are used to fake Esau's hairiness.

Here: 'To the hairy ones.' The ordinary word for a male goat (from se'ar, 'hair'), used here for goat-shaped spirits believed to haunt the open country and wilderness, or images of them. Ironically, the same word names the goats Israel was to bring to the LORD (Lev 16:5).
